Experience
My first priority when teaching is to find out exactly where a breakdown in understanding has occurred. I try to avoid route memorization when possible, and instead attempt to foster understanding of the subject. My belief is that it is easy to forget names, dates, and rules, but once you really understand a subject, it's yours forever. I also believe in the value of different teaching styles: if the student is not gaining understanding from a text book or lecture, it's best to try something different.
